American Canyon Winter Percussion and Guard Competition Saturday, February 21st

Our first winter percussion competition is upon us. It is IMPERATIVE that you attend practices ON TIME. Due to two Monday holidays, the percussion practice 2/13 starts at 4 pm, and there is an additional practice for guard & percussion on 2/14 from 8:30 am to 2 pm.

Please pay your food fee of $35.00 to Mrs. Wilmer by February 20th. We also need drivers for students. The form was given out with the yellow competition dates paper. Please let Mrs. Wilmer know asap if a parent can drive students!

Permission slips are due Friday, the 6th, extra credit for Thursday. There is a 10% grade penalty for permission slips coming in after 2/6.

February Notes ... We love to stay busy!

Our booster meetings this month are Wednesday, the 4th and the 18th beginning at 6 pm at Rodrigo’s Camal on Micron Ave. The first meeting is the general meeting; the second pertains to TOC planning.

The February Disney payment of $57.00 is due the 6th bringing the total paid to $285.00. The Disney 3-day passport for our group and guests is $170.00 this year, $4.00 more than first stated. The new total for the trip is $403.00. Attached is your child’s current account. Your child’s paid to date must total at least $200.00 by February 13th. The large Disney bill is due the beginning of next month and the hotel bill before spring break. Money must be in the account to pay the bills. Please send any family passport requests to Mrs. Wilmer by the 13th.

Openings are still available for people 18 and over to raise trip money. Work Mandarins' Bingo Hall on Tech Center Drive. Times are available on several different days. Contact Vera Holland at: hollandhealing@yahoo.com or 916-470-8731.

We are hosting our district’s Middle and High School All-City Honor Bands and MS Honor Orchestra. There is an all-day rehearsal here Friday, Feb. 6th. The “dress” rehearsal is Tuesday, Feb. 10th from 7 – 9pm and the free concert is Wednesday, Feb. 11th starting at 7:30 pm in the large theater. The concert looks to be a lively affair. Music students can receive extra credit for attending. RHS performers already receive the extra credit.

Our winter guard & percussion are working hard to prepare for their first competition. It is at American Canyon HS in Napa on Saturday, Feb. 21st. Since we lose two Mondays in a row, we are looking to add extra rehearsal time. The 2/13 practice will start at 4 pm (bring food for dinner), and there will be a practice Saturday, 2/14 (‘cuz we love you) from 8:30 am to 2 pm. Because it is short notice, please inform Mrs. Wilmer of prior commitments.

Winter Guard and Winter Percussion Update

Reminders to all:

1. Return your syllabus sheet as soon as possible if not done already.
2. Our camp is the evening of Friday, January 10th and the morning of Saturday, January 11th. Check your drum/spin-a-thon paper for times.
3. Work on those end-of-the-year tax contributions for the drum and spin-a-thon fundraiser done in conjunction with the camp. That money helps defray the cost of mallets, flags, and other necessary items for this year’s shows. We don’t want to charge you for your costumes, mallets, etc.
4. Our food fee for the winter is $30.00. In the fall that covered 5 competitions, making it $6.00 per day. The boosters are also feeding you at camp, so the $30.00 actually covers 6 events, making it a bargain.
5. The boosters need the food money by Friday, January 10th, day of the camp. They approved a $5.00 increase to $35.00 if money is late. Pay your money to Mrs. Wilmer; she will give you a receipt.

It’s time to build on our success. Percussion – there is a called practice Thursday from 3-7 pm since we perform Friday. It is our ONLY Friday performance until Essence of Rosemont.

Parent Letter: Important Winter Guard/Percussion Info

My name is Holly Foell. I’m the president of the Rosemont Music Boosters. My husband, Greg, and I have two children in the music program at Rosemont, a senior and freshman. We intend to be committed to the program for several more years as we believe it is a tremendous opportunity for our children.

Mrs. Wilmer (The RHS Music Director) and the Boosters need some help! Our students just finished their first live performance in Modesto. The real competition season begins in just a couple of weeks. Our 32 students in winter percussion and guard are putting in long hours of practice, as a group and individually, to be ready to represent Rosemont. The Associated Student Body paid our entry fees, showing their support for our program and students. Now it’s our turn!

We have 4 competitions still ahead. The closest is Elk Grove HS, and the farthest is the Tournament of Champions in Oroville. While other schools charge about $150.00 per student per winter season to cover transportation, food and instructor fees, we’re following the law which says we can only charge for consumables. That’s why we must have enough parents step forward to help!

A school bus runs about $1000.00 for a day-long event, which we simply can’t afford at this time. We need volunteers to drive to the events, and each family needs to volunteer for one or more jobs below so no one is asked to do more than their fair share. The job descriptions are on the back of this letter.

These events will not be possible without your support. Please check your calendar now and mark in the grid below what you will do and when you will do it. Please get this sheet back to Mrs. Wilmer by Friday, March 1st so we will know how to plan for the fun days ahead!

Job Descriptions

Sewing Costumes for Percussion: Add gold trim to sleeves and collars and make gold wristbands, which can be done by hand or machine.

Helping With Food: Shopping with Booster President Holly Foell, usually 2-3 days prior to each event including storage check of non-perishables. Time of day is flexible. Cook food for event: The meals are usually prepared the night before, brought that day and heated up at the event. We plan for about 45 people including coaches and drivers. The meals are simple like spaghetti or burritos. Job is usually split between people.

Towing The Trailer: A critical job, this requires a pick-up, 1/2 ton or larger. We have the proper size hitch if needed. You need an electrical connection for brake lights. We reimburse for gas if necessary.

Driving Students: This is our greatest need! Attached is the form the school needs on file. It is good for the entire school year. In addition to the form, they require a photocopy of your driver’s license and a copy of your insurance policy declaration page, which is the first page of your policy, showing specific coverage in each category. At this point, that is all our school has requested officially.

For the three local competitions, drivers can leave and return for pick up at a designated time, but please note that staying to help with food, watching the competitions and celebrating at awards is always appreciated by the students! And it’s a fun time for the whole family!

Enochs Winter Percussion and Guard Competition - Saturday, February 16th

Our first winter percussion competition is upon us. It is IMPERATIVE that you attend ON TIME the practices this week on Monday, Thursday (guard only) and Friday.

Early February Guard Notes

Wal-Mart no longer carries the leotards we use. We have to order them from Discount Dance Supply. Every girl will need to pay $10.00 & Mr. Moreno will cover the remaining amount.

Due to the amount of absences at rehearsals, students will be tested on Monday, February 11th during rehearsal from 5 – 9pm, or the end of the women’s home game, whichever is first.

Students will be tested on knowledge of choreography, ability to maintain tempo and the ability to perform independently in relation to the show taught. This test is important because the judges expect all students performing to attain the same skill level; it does not matter to them how many or the reasons for absences by anyone or how long it takes anyone to learn the routine. So … PRACTICE AT HOME!

Those who cannot meet these criteria will not perform with the group at the first show February 16th; however, attendance is still required. The 2nd show is March 9th.

There is an added dress rehearsal on Friday, February 15th from 3 – 5pm.

As with every show, we are looking for a parent to tow the trailer. This first show is the farthest away in Modesto. The other 3 shows are in the Sacramento metro area.

Mid-January Marching Band / Winter Percussion / Winter Guard News

Updates to previous information:

We will not be participating in the MLK365 “Marade” on Monday, January 21st. They just sent the logistical information today. Students I spoke to last Saturday at the drum / spin-a-thon said it was more important to spend that day studying for their finals, which begin the next day. The timeframe required for the event would have been 6 am to about 1 pm, including a 5 ½ mile march.

Also, a reminder that the call time for the concert this Wednesday, the 16th, is 6:30 pm. The marching band will start the program with the Star Spangled Banner and close with General Mitchell March and a drum cadence. The concert is required as part of students’ semester final. Extra credit is given for each person attending on your behalf. Booster parents in the lobby will have the sign-in sheets.

Our next basketball game is Tuesday, the 22nd with call time at 6 pm. Please bring study materials for your 3rd and 4th period finals. We will be done by about 8:30 pm. The game on the 30th is cancelled because they flipped the home and away dates for McClatchy and we were not given enough lead time (1 ½ days) to re-schedule our appearance. The game on Tuesday, February 5th is still scheduled.

Please remember to return your uniforms in their garment bag ASAP. There is a rack in the music room, just hang it up. Guard ladies; remember to put your uniform on a hanger. Everything is numbered, so we know what was checked out to whom.

The winter guard schedule during finals week is: Tuesday the 22nd and Thursday the 24th from 1 – 5 pm.

The winter percussion schedule during finals week is: Wednesday, the 23rd from 1 – 5 pm and Friday from 5 – 9 pm.

Everyone needs to get in their drum / spin-a-thon donation money ASAP so we can plan and order needed equipment/supplies.

Letter to Winter Percussion and Winter Guard Participants

Welcome! You’ve made the awesome decision to join Winter Percussion and Winter Guard for the 2012-13 season. For musicians, you'll either play in the battery (snare, tenor, bass, cymbals) or the pit (mallet, keyboard, general percussion, guitar/bass).
The instructors are Mr. Matthew Kwong - battery (mjkwong@ucdavis.edu) and Ms. Micaela Rayray - pit (micrayray@gmail.com).

The MD (Music Director, like Athletic Director) is Mrs. Robin Wilmer. (rosemontmusic@gmail.com).

The music and drill are written especially for our group, by Mr. Chris McCoy, our drum instructor last year, with staff collaboration.

Weekly rehearsals: Mondays 3:00 – 6 pm, Wednesdays 3 – 5 pm and Fridays 5 – 9pm in respect for the time of all students including athletes. It is expected that non-athletes go home on Fridays and do homework. Extra lunch sectional rehearsals can be called by the section leaders, or instructors. As we approach each competition, extra rehearsals are called in advance and posted.

Each Friday rehearsal is vital. To fully learn their parts and how they fit into the whole, everyone must be present. Students needing to miss a rehearsal or portion thereof need to submit a signed note from their parent a minimum of one week prior to rehearsal.

Our competition schedule is:

• Friday – Saturday, Jan. 11-12: Drum-a-thon (our camp). Information on separate sheet.
• Saturday, February 16th -- Enochs in Modesto (all day). Saturday, March 9th – Woodcreek, the second day of the Science fair in the evening.
• Friday, March 15th – Del Oro – evening competition.
• Saturday, March 23rd – Elk Grove (all day). This is the first day of Spring break.
• Friday, April 5th - NCBA or locally sponsored show, probably hosted by US!!

Absences for rehearsals during competition week will only be excused for serious and compelling reasons (i. e. extreme illness, death in the family). Absences will not be excused for competitions. If you know you cannot make one or more of the above competitions, do everyone, including yourself, a favor and withdraw now from the winter percussion squad.

Fees: Unlike other schools, there are no fees for entrance into winter percussion. ASB paid our entry fees. Students will be dressing in a costume appropriate to the theme determined by the music. All students must have the black marching band shoes to wear. If you need to buy a pair, please see Mrs. Wilmer for details. Students are asked to pay $25.00 to cover food for the five competitions served by the boosters.
Students are also asked to participate in the drum-a-thon fund raiser to help offset the cost of writing and producing the drill for the show. The drum-a-thon takes place Jan. 11 - 12 and will be our “winter percussion camp. ”
