January Notes ... a new year begins ....

Our next booster board meeting is Wednesday, Jan. 7th beginning at 6pm at the Round Table on Kiefer Blvd. All adults are invited. One topic will be our hosting of the Tournament of Champions on March 28th!

The next Disney payment is due Friday, January 9th. Attached is your child’s current balance. The total at this point should be $228.00. Students who worked the Voter Registration received their check and are responsible for getting it cashed and the money turned in to the bookkeeper, Ms. Keck. There is still an opportunity for parents to work the Mandarins Bingo mentioned in the mid-December notes. You can contact our fundraising chairperson, Kelley Moore at: lovessuperman75@yahoo.com for more details.

Saturday, January 10th we have two events here at RHS. One is the booster’s annual e-waste in the front parking lot from 8am to 1pm. We accept all type of electronics for recycling, with the exception of appliances like hair dryers or microwaves. We particularly are looking for electronics with screens, such as TVs or laptops. The other event, also from 8am to 1pm, is our annual drum-a-thon and spin-a-thon, which doubles as our winter clinic to focus on each group’s winter show.

Our Winter Concert is slated for Wednesday, January 14th. As with the fall concert, call time is 6:30pm with the concert beginning at 7pm. It is expected to last no more than 90 minutes with three groups performing. It is one component of each student’s fall semester final. Each student was issued concert attire. Before leaving our room for the stage, each student will go through an inspection to confirm his/her dress or pants are hemmed. It is important because a) the bottom can fray if not hemmed, even if just turned under & hemmed, and b) Disney will not let anyone on stage with un-hemmed “costume.” Instructions are behind the student’s name in the garment bag. As with the fall concert, students receive extra credit for each person that attends in their behalf.

This week I am confirming and recruiting students interested in playing in the district All-City honor band and honor orchestra. We are hosting this year! There is a reading practice Wed. 1/28 in the evening, all-school day practice here on Friday, Feb. 6th, final run-through evening practice Tues. Feb. 10th, and the concert Wed. Feb. 11th.

Another component of each student’s fall semester final is the in-class performance beginning January 15th. Order is chosen randomly. Each person is required to play a piece for the class with the class as audience. Video recording is for documentation purposes. It is expected students perform from their etude book. The song requirements are: 1) song length is at least 3 lines, 2) it cannot be from ensemble sheet music, i.e. the cello part to Air & Dance or the 2nd trumpet part to Amazing Grace, 3) selection should be from etude book (or can be printed off the internet). Students will do an in-class performance each of the next three quarters. They are allowed to partner with another member or perform on a different instrument ONE of those three times.

Thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at the winter concert on the 14th.
