Mid-December Notes . . . important additions to our earlier notes . . .

The voter registration checks came in and were distributed on 12/8. It is up to each individual to cash/deposit the check and make a Disney deposit with the school. Students are to still bring me their receipt from the bookkeeper for individual credit.

The next Disney deposit was due Dec. 5th bringing the total on account to $171.00. Attached is a copy of your child’s current account. Several people still have marching band fees to pay and those MUST be paid prior to any further Disney deposits. Names are on the board and bills still outstanding will be mailed home over break since students have received two bills earlier in the year. Please take care of these bills!

On that note, there is a special opportunity for people 18 and over to earn money for Disneyland. You can earn $30.00 a session working the Mandarins Bingo Hall off Tech Center Drive. Contact our fundraising chairperson, Kelley Corder, at: lovessuperman75@yahoo.com. Space available is limited, so contact her ASAP.

I have information for families interested in going to Disneyland at the same time as the group. The Anaheim Residence Inn will give families the following discounts:
  1. 1BD Double Queen: $132 + tax = $154.69 per room per night. Room sleeps a max of 6 – with two per bed, including sofa sleeper
  2. 1BD King: $119 + tax = $139.48 per room per night. Room sleeps a max of 4 – with two per bed, including sofa sleeper
  3. 2BD King/2 twin beds (bunked): $169 + tax = $197.98 per room per night. Room sleeps a max of 6 – with two in king, one per twin bed, and two on sofa sleeper
Each individual guest must make their own reservations by calling 1-800-331-3131 by March 13th. They must identify themselves as members of the “Rosemont High School Music Group” to get the above discounted rates. All reservations must be guaranteed with a “major credit card.” Disney changes their passport costs January 1. I should know the new costs once we are back from winter break.

The Bee reports that the Rosemont area leads the way in charitable contributions. Please check here on our website www.rhsmusic.net and consider the Music Boosters as a tax contribution for the 2014 tax year. Ask family and friends if they would also consider this worthwhile organization. People can donate with a credit card or their PayPal account. If someone wants to write a check or donate cash, please email me at: rosemontmusic@gmail.com

A quick reminder to students, you have the opportunity to make up two practice charts over break. These charts should be labeled 12B and/or 12C.

Thank you so much for your support of Rosemont music!

December notes . . . a time for joy!

First, thank you to all who attended the fall concert right before Thanksgiving. Several adults mentioned it was one of the best fall concerts here at Rosemont. We look forward to seeing you all at the winter concert, Wednesday, January 14th, same time, same place. We’re working to issue concert attire to students prior to winter break so they can hem the pants/dress.

Next, at the concert we began our next Butter Braid fundraiser. Students receive $5.00 for their Disney account for each item sold. This week the top three sellers received their iTunes gift cards from the RHS Music Boosters as a reward for their hard work. The boosters will extend the same offer after this sale. Orders and money are due Wednesday, Dec. 10
th with delivery on the 17th, just in time for the holidays.

We got some big news this week. We got our results back from our Disney auditions and both the orchestra and band passed! They are scheduled for their workshops on Monday, April 13
th and their CA Adventure performance on Tuesday, April 14th. Now that I have firm student numbers I can notify chaperons of whether we need them and the costs involved. Mr. and Mrs. McLelland already graciously volunteered to pull our trailer, which we need for instruments and concert attire backstage.

On a related note, the December deposit of $57.00 is due the 5
th. Letters for those students placed on the waiting list were sent over Thanksgiving. Checks for the Voter Registration have yet to arrive. Please stay up with deposits so we can get bills paid on time.

Both band classes are in the midst of testing. The Concert band members are playing the solo in the back of their band book. The Symphonic band members are playing all 12 major scales and arpeggios. Memorization is extra credit. As I told them, when I taught at Einstein, my top band had to play them from memory, so they’re getting off light. ;-)

A tradition here at Rosemont, the orchestra and Symphonic band play for the school on Friday, December 19
th. The music is holiday-themed. They will play periods 1 -4 in the Large Theater. The 4th period guitar class will play Christmas Eve Sarejevo that period, the orchestra periods 1 – 3. Classes are invited to attend. You are invited, but must sign in at the office first.

Thank you for your support of the Rosemont HS music department.

Mid-November Notes ... a new quarter begins ...

This is a busy time of year. We just finished the first quarter, the mid-term of the fall semester. In this newsletter are some review items and new events.

First, to review. Practice charts are the student's homework and due every Friday. There are boxes along the top of the form where the time practiced each day of that week is recorded. The remainder of the form is the charting and reflecting of ONE session that week. Writing about only one session helps me see how the student distributes and uses the time, plus helps each student plan attainable goals. Students are met at the door Fridays and the chart is collected at that point. If a student is absent, the chart is due the day s/he returns. The practice charts are worth 30% of the overall grade, a significant percentage. Students who have neglected to turn in practice charts are currently failing the class.

There is good news. As we continue through the semester each chart is a smaller part of the 30%. The additional good news is that students can choose to practice over Thanksgiving break and make-up a missed chart. Students may pick up a chart on Friday, Nov. 21st, label it chart #9A and return it Dec. 1st. For those students who are caught up on their charts, this chart 9A counts as extra credit. Either way, it's a win-win. The same procedure happens during Winter break.

Many of our AP Theory students are also in marching band, which is a time sponge in the fall. This quarter they may turn in late work with a 5% penalty.

Our Fall concert is slated for Thursday, Nov. 20th. The call time for performers is 6:30 pm with the concert beginning at 7 pm in our beautiful Performing Arts Theater. All four musical groups are set to perform: the string orchestra, the concert, symphonic bands and the marching band & color guard. Plus, our wonderful Booster board members for this year will be introduced. We anticipate the concert to last no more than 90 minutes.

Family and friends are encouraged to attend. Students receive extra credit for each person who signs in on their behalf at one of the lobby tables. You are welcome to sign for more than one student; the more, the merrier! Also available at the tables will be the Booster budget review for ratification and our Butter Braid fundraising forms. This concert is casual, performers should wear their black RHS music shirt, or if they don't have one yet, their Big Blue shirt, along with dark pants/skirts and comfortable shoes. Our formal concert attire will be issued in December.

We have six students participating in the Causeway Youth Band Festival. It occurs every other year with a composer as primary conductor; this year Timothy Mahr. The performance is at 7 pm, Sunday Nov. 23rd in the fantastic Mondavi Center. Also on the concert are the CSUS Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the UCD Concert Band. Performing in a world-class performance venue is a special treat!

Saturday, Nov. 15th is the marching band’s Tournament of Champions at Lincoln HS of Stockton. Food and equipment bills went out again this week for anyone still owing. Please get those bills paid as soon as possible! As we move out of marching season, we move into winter percussion and winter guard season. Guard clinics are scheduled Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 - 5 pm in the music room or Little Theater. Percussion clinics are Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 3:30 – 5:30. Audition schedule to be announced. We are hosting the Tournament of Champions this year March 28th, so keep that date open. Our show hosting last year was a huge success, due largely to the help of our parents, students, and community!

Like all other classes, our classes depend on attendance and participation for individual success. Unlike other classes, however, if students are absent in a music class the entire class suffers. To bring our classes into line with other music classes in the district, students who are absent, excused or not, will not receive that day’s participation / professionalism credit beginning after Thanksgiving break.

Lastly, about our Disney trip. We submitted our new audition material Nov. 1st and await the results. Our second payment of $57.00 was due Nov. 7th with the next payment due Dec. 5th . Thank you to those who have made one or more payments. It is vital that accounts stay paid up so that when bills from our vendors are due we can pay promptly. If you have made payments, your current account, along with fudraising earnings is attached to this newsletter.

As stated in the initial information letter, students in the orchestra and concert band must be able to play the music to the level Disney expects of our group as demonstrated in our audition. At this point, we have several students who we need to place on a waiting list for the trip. The reasons range from attendance concerns to playing experience. I will mail a letter home to these students explaining their specific situation. Additions to the waiting list can occur for those students who do not stay up with the payment schedule. Mrs. Wilmer must be informed of extenuating circumstances.

Thank you for your continuing support of the Rosemont HS Music Program. We look forward to seeing you Nov. 20th!

Early April Notes and News

A myriad of events, but none are taxing ....

We are wrapping up the third quarter and plunging into the fourth quarter with many activities!

The first SCUSD
High School Honor Band holds their rehearsals and concert in the next two weeks. All participants received permission slips and itineraries. I urge all members to touch base with each other to set up carpools for the rehearsals on April 2nd and 9th. We still need a car to carpool students for the full-day rehearsal on April 4th as the bus fell through. The concert is Thursday, April 10th beginning at 7 pm at Kennedy HS.

The
Festa di Vino fundraiser is Saturday, April 5th. The informational meeting is Tuesday, April 1st right after school for about 15 minutes. There are still two slots left for anyone wishing to raise money for their music account. The sign-up sheet is in the announcement section of the white board.

Essence of Rosemont is Friday, April 11th. The Winter Percussion and Winter Guard close the evening’s festivities in the large gym. Come and see their award-winning shows. Call time is 6:45 pm. If it is not raining, we can set up in the large gym & leave everything. If it is raining, we’ll need to work it like a show where we bring it right in, perform & right out. We have a music booster booth selling snow cones, and so much more! The booster board will be there to answer questions about the future fund raisers and there will be bells and drums available for the little ones to dip their feet into the music water! We're looking forward to seeing the 8th grade students join our groups next fall.

Parent support is critical for the continued success of the music program.
Please think about joining the booster board. We need parents from ALL classes to join our board. The commitment is one 1 ½ hour meeting per month. Booster board parents can tell you that the rewards are many, watching our students grow musically. We need the volunteer help of ALL our parents in some capacity next year, to maintain our standing as a premier music program in the Sacramento area. We will have a meeting in May with nominations for next year's board and information about our fireworks booth, our biggest money-maker.

Student mid-term playing tests / in-class performances are starting. The Cadet and Concert bands have their playing test in class beginning April 1
st. The Symphonic Band and String Orchestra’s in-class performances begin April 7th. Practice chart J is due April 4th. Practice chart K is due April 11th. K’s grade will be reflected in the 4th quarter due to the elimination of Zangle that day. An extra-credit practice chart, K9, can be done over spring break and turned in on Monday, April 21st.

Our “
Downton Abbey” concert, featuring English music of the early 20th Century, is slated for Wednesday, April 23rd at 7 pm in the Performing Arts Theater. This is our third required concert of the school year.

Performances will feature:

  1. The RHS Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Cadet Band and String Orchestra
  2. Music by Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger and Ralph Vaughn-Williams
  3. The opportunity to listen to various settings of the same composition for aesthetic valuing, one of the main music standards.

Our String Orchestra received an invitation to perform for the 50th anniversary celebration of CAPEDS, Capital Area Association of Educational Office Professionals. It is Tuesday evening, April 29th at the Casa Del Los Ninos. It is an honor and tribute to our reputation that we were selected to perform. The group will get more information as I receive it.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at Essence and the Downton Abbey concert!

Vounteers Needed Friday, March 14th!

Winter Percussion / Guard Competition Hosting Information for Friday, March 14th
34 Groups Are Scheduled to Perform!
Please read and respond quickly.  Very Important!

We are proud to announce that for the first time Rosemont High School is hosting a NCBA sanctioned Winter Percussion / Guard competition. It is extremely important that we have more than enough volunteers for every job to make a huge success of this event so Rosemont High School can host again. Besides being an honor and helping to build the prestige of Rosemont High School, hosting a show is an opportunity to raise money to support all phases of our music programs!

We need volunteers in the following areas:

  •  Parking Attendants - large need - 12 Adult Volunteers - 6 per shift
  • Door Monitors - large need - 12 Adult Volunteers - 4 per shift
  • Ticket Booth Attendants - 4 Adult Volunteers - 2 per shift
  • Director Check-In Booth Attendants - 4 Adult Volunteers - 2 per shift
  • Information Booth / Roving Guides - 6 Adult Volunteers - 2 per shift
  • Concession Stand - 6 Adult Volunteers - 3 per shift

Students will be working the event, as well, but adults must be in charge in each venue.

Job Descriptions

Parking attendants: supervise flow of cars, buses and trailers for the show. Schools will already have maps and parking passes directing them to a specific lot. The stadium lot is for buses, trailers, and carpooling vehicles with a parking pass. The front and back lots are for mainly spectators' cars. The stadium attendants ask each vehicle entering the name of the group, check for the parking pass, and direct them to the correct parking area. Attendant shifts are 3 - 5:15pm and 5 - 7:15pm. The first shift is the most critical, and we especially need men to handle the stadium lot.

Door monitors: Monitor the gym lobby doors, check the hand stamp, and guide them to the proper location, plus keep doors closed during the actual competition of each group. Those at the entrance/exit doors for competitors check each person entering to insure their hand is stamped and keep the doors closed during the actual competition time of each group. Shifts are 4:15 - 6:15pm,  6:00 - 7:45pm, 7:30 - 9:15pm.

Ticket booth: Take money and stamp hands. Shifts are 3:30 – 6:00pm and 6 - 8:30pm.

Concession stand: Sell food in concession stand next to ticket booth. Shifts are 4 - 6:15pm, 6 - 8:30pm.

Director check-in booth: Check in each school, take / dispense paperwork and stamp director, staff and participants' hands. Shifts are 3 - 5pm, 5 - 7pm.

Information booth: The information booth supplies general info concerning performing times, restroom locations, etc. Shifts are 3 – 5:30pm, 5:15 - 7:45pm, 7:30 - 9:30pm.

We will use students stationed throughout the campus with copies of the schedule for the same reason.

Winter Guard and Winter Percussion Update

Reminders to all:
  1. Return your syllabus sheet as soon as possible if not done already.
  2. Our camp is the evening of Friday, January 10th and the morning of Saturday, January 11th. Check your drum/spin-a-thon paper for times.
  3. Work on those end-of-the-year tax contributions for the drum and spin-a-thon fundraiser done in conjunction with the camp. That money helps defray the cost of mallets, flags, and other necessary items for this year’s shows. We don’t want to charge you for your costumes, mallets, etc.
  4. Our food fee for the winter is $30.00. In the fall that covered 5 competitions, making it $6.00 per day. The boosters are also feeding you at camp, so the $30.00 actually covers 6 events, making it a bargain.
  5. The boosters need the food money by Friday, January 10th, day of the camp. They approved a $5.00 increase to $35.00 if money is late. Pay your money to Mrs. Wilmer; she will give you a receipt.

Looking forward to a great season!!!

December/Early January Band Notes

It’s ALWAYS the season for music ….

We now accept PayPal (or credit card) donations on our website! All music parents are members of the RHS Music Boosters! As you speak with family, friends and co-workers, please share our Booster Donation Letter (click on the link to open a new window with the letter in it) that explains our situation. Encourage them to consider a donation to our program! Please put your thinking cap on and help us raise funds for our program! Plus, we're always looking for parents to join in the fun of working with the students. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing how hard our students work!

The
orchestra is playing our annual performance for the school on the 20th. Classes are invited each period to attend our performance of holiday-themed music that culminates in a performance with Christmas Eve Sarajevo with either guitars or our class. The morning and afternoon performances will feature different songs for students who might see the performance more than once.

Students can get
credit for two practice charts during winter break. Students were issued two charts before break. Concert, Symphonic bands and orchestra number them 13A & B. The beginners’ charts are 11A and 11B. They can choose to turn in one or both depending on time available to practice. They should spend time preparing for our concert January 15th.

The
Winter Concert is slated for Wednesday, January 15th at 7pm for all music groups and lasts about 90 minutes. Call time for performers is 6:30pm, which is when we also open the hall. The orchestra, Concert and Symphonic band members wear their concert attire. Make sure the dress or pants are hemmed. The Cadet (Beginning) Band wears their “Event best” semi-formal wear.

Our boosters are sponsoring an electronic
“e-waste” collection on Saturday, January 11th from 8am to 1pm. Hold onto those old electronics and support the music program by bringing them to the front parking lot that day. Sorry, we cannot take appliances.

An important aspect of every student’s practice session is work in their etude book. After our winter concert
each student will perform a self-selected etude, song or exercise from their book to play for the class as part of their semester’s final practice grade. Performance order is randomly determined by computer. It’s a great opportunity to get students accustomed to performing independently in front of an understanding and supportive audience.

Thank you again for your support of music and recognizing, like university admissions officers, its importance in a well-rounded student’s education.
